Prepare your camera and wait for the world-famous sunrise. After watching the sunrise, enter the interior of the great temple and spend around two hours exploring the corridors full of carvings, central chambers, and upper terraces.
Prasat Bayon
30 minutes
The Bayon Temple is a 12th century masterpiece lying at the very center of Angkor Thom City, an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. Besides extensive bas-relief carvings on the exterior gallery walls, the main features are towers each with 3 or 4 serene and gently smiling faces, 216 in total, which are representations of King Jayavarman VII.
Baphuon
30 minutes
Built in the mid-11th century, it is a three-tiered temple mountain. In 13th century, envoy Chou Ta-kuan from the Yuan dynasty said it was "the Tower of Bronze... a truly astonishing spectacle..."
Terrace of the Elephants
30 minutes
The terrace was used by Angkor's king Jayavarman VII as a giant platform to view his victorious returning army and hold public ceremonies. The wall is decorated with life size garuda and lions, as well as two parts of the famous parade of elephants.
Phimeanakas
30 minutes
When it was built, the tower was originally crowned with a golden pinnacle. According to legend, the king spent the first watch of every night with a woman thought to represent a Naga in the tower, during that time, not even the queen was permitted to intrude. Only in the second watch the king returned to his palace with the queen. If the Naga who was the supreme land owner of Khmer land did not show up for a night, the king's day would be numbered, if the king did not show up, calamity would strike his land.
Suor Prat Tower
30 minutes
This is a series of 12 towers, believed to be used to settle disputes among Angkorian people. When a dispute cannot be resolved, "... each of the contestants is forced to sit in one of them... After three or four days, he who is wrong shows it by suffering some illness... Thus right or wrong is determined by what is called 'divine judgement'..."
Restaurant
1.5 hours
Enjoy a delicious Khmer-style lunch in front of the majestic site, and take a short break from the hot weather.
Ta Keo
30 minutes
Ta Keo is the state temple of Jayavarman V, possibly the first to be built entirely of sandstone by Khmers. Its particularly massive appearance is due to the absence of external decorations, as carving had just begun when the work stopped.
Ta Prohm Temple
1.5 hours
Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. The temple gained its wide popularity partially because it was used in the film Tomb Raider.
Phnom Bakheng
1.5 hours
Located atop a hill, Phnom Bakheng is the final stop of the tour where you wait for gorgeous sunset views. It is a Hindu and Buddhist temple in the form of a temple mountain. The large number of visitors also makes Phnom Bakheng one of the most threatened monuments of Angkor.
